QR codes on Shopify, Etsy & print-on-demand orders

Every package you ship is a free chance to get a review, a follower or a repeat order. Here's how to put a QR code on it — without being held hostage when you've printed thousands of inserts.

First: free static or editable Pro?

If the link will never change (your shop homepage), a free static code is perfect — the link lives inside the pattern and never touches our servers. If it might change — a seasonal promo, a review site you might switch, a tracking page — use a Pro code so you can update the destination after printing. Pro codes are a one-time purchase (from $12 CAD for 20) and stay active even if you never buy again.

What to put on the insert

Shopify packing slips

  1. 1

    Create your code

    Make a code in the generator and download the PNG at 2× or 4×.

  2. 2

    Upload the image to Shopify

    In Shopify admin go to ContentFiles, upload the PNG, then use the link icon to copy its URL.

  3. 3

    Edit the packing slip template

    Go to SettingsShipping and deliveryPacking slipsEdit. Paste the snippet near the bottom, before the closing tags, and replace the placeholder with your file link.

    {% comment %} ForeverQR — paste near the bottom of your packing slip {% endcomment %}
    <div style="text-align:center; margin-top:24px;">
      <img src="PASTE-YOUR-SHOPIFY-FILE-LINK-HERE"
           alt="Scan to leave a review"
           style="width:1in; height:1in;">
      <p style="font-size:11px; margin:6px 0 0;">
        Thanks for your order {{ order.name }}! Scan to leave a review.
      </p>
    </div>
  4. 4

    Preview and print a test

    Click Preview template, print one slip at actual size and scan it with your phone before your next batch.

Shopify product page example

A QR code on a product page lets desktop shoppers jump to their phone — handy for care videos, size guides or reviews. Works with any Online Store 2.0 theme, including Dawn and Horizon.

  1. 1

    Open the theme editor

    Go to Online StoreThemesCustomize and switch the top dropdown to Products → Default product.

  2. 2

    Add a Custom Liquid block

    In the product information section, click Add block → Custom Liquid and drag it under the buy buttons.

  3. 3

    Paste the snippet and save

    {% comment %} ForeverQR — product page "Continue on your phone" block {% endcomment %}
    <div style="display:flex; gap:16px; align-items:center; padding:16px; border:1px solid rgba(0,0,0,.1); border-radius:12px;">
      <img src="PASTE-YOUR-SHOPIFY-FILE-LINK-HERE" alt="Scan to open on your phone" width="96" height="96">
      <div>
        <strong>Continue on your phone</strong>
        <p style="margin:4px 0 0; font-size:14px;">Scan to see care instructions, sizing and reviews.</p>

Etsy orders

Etsy doesn't let you edit its packing slip layout, so put your code on a printed thank-you card or sticker that goes in the box.

  • Good uses: leave a review on Etsy, care instructions, your social accounts.
  • Avoid: sending buyers to your own off-Etsy store or offering discounts for reviews — Etsy's policies discourage both.
  • Print cards at home on matte card stock, or order them with your other print materials.

Print-on-demand (Printful, Printify, Gelato)

Options vary by provider and product — check whether yours offers pack-in inserts, custom neck labels or branded packaging. Place the QR inside the insert design and export as SVG or PDF for the sharpest print. Use a Pro code: if you change providers or links later, every unit already shipped keeps working.

Size & placement checklist

2 cm

Minimum — smooth card only

2.5 cm

Safe for most inserts

3.5 cm

Textured card, stickers, tags

Relative print sizes (not to scale on screen — print the test sheet to check real size).

  • At least 2 cm (about ¾ in) wide; 2.5 cm or more is safer on textured card.
  • Keep a clear margin around the code — don't let text or borders touch it.
  • Dark code on a light background. Avoid glossy finishes right over the code.
  • Add a short call to action under it: “Scan to leave a review”.
